SUBMISSION
A manuscript should be prepared as described in the Instructions to Authors SUBMITTING MANUSCRIPTS and thoroughly checked (see the checklist) [*for article length limitations, please see below]. Poor language, substantial departures from the instructions, and/or missing or incomplete submission form will result in returning the manuscript without review.
To facilitate reviewing, lines of the text should be continuously numbered [e.g. in MS Word, please select 'Document' from the 'Format' menu, press 'Layout' and in the next window 'Line numbers ...', then check 'Add line numbering', 'Start at = 1', 'From text = Auto', 'Count by = 1' and select 'Continuous'; after pressing OK, lines in your document will be numbered]. Figures should be prepared exclusively with black-and-white or grey-scale settings unless they are meant to be printed in colour. Different colours may produce the same shade of grey when printed in black-and-white.
All submissions can only be made by e-mail according to the following procedure:
1. Convert the manuscript, figures and tables into the PDF format, and join the files into one if several have been created. Exceptionally we can accept submission consisting of several PDF files. Please do not submit your article or its parts in other formats (e.g. MS Word). PDF files should not be protected in any way.
2. Make sure that filenames do not exceed 20 characters and that, for compatibility reasons, only ASCII characters (decimal codes from 48 to 125) are used. The surname of the first author is a good choice for a filename [e.g. Smith.pdf]. Do not use the article title for filenames.
3. Have the PDF file(s) containing the entire article ready.
4. Download the submission form from HERE and open it with Adobe Reader (or Adobe Acrobat) if it does not open automatically in this application (at least Adobe Reader 7 or higher is needed to complete this step). Since the form can be filled out only when opened with Adobe Reader (or Adobe Acrobat), if the form opens directly in a browser (preview mode) and you cannot enter data, right-click it and select 'Open with Adobe Reader' or 'Open with Adobe Acrobat'. If despite that the form cannot be filled or saved please contact us directly at sekj[at]helsinki.fi
5. Fill out the form (Important: light-blue fields are required and, to complete submission, they should not be left empty).
6. Click the 'SAVE' button, add the surname of the first author after 'subm_form' [e.g. subm_form_Smith.pdf], and save the completed submission form at the same location as the PDF file(s) containing the article to be submitted.
7. Click E-MAIL to start your e-mail aplication.
8. Attach the PDF file(s) containing your article and the submission form to the e-mail and replace the text in the body with a cover letter and your contact information.
9. Complete submission by sending the e-mail.If the submission is complete and fulfills our requirements listed in the instructions, you (and all co-authors) will shortly receive acknowledgement of receipt of the paper. If the acknowledgement message or any pertinent information does not reach your within a few days, please inquire by sending an e-mail to sekj[at]helsinki.fi
*A paper whose total length in print is max. 16 pages will be published free of charge. If an article's length in print exceeds 16 pages, a page charge (to be paid prior to printing) of 60 euros per each page over 16 will apply. To evaluate how many journal pages can result from a manuscript, please first remove the tables and pictures from the file and then perform character count (including spaces) [in MS Word: select 'Word Count' from 'Tools' menu], and divide the obtained number by 4600 (max. number of characters on one printed page of our journal). Some pages should be added to the result depending on how many figures and tables are in the manuscript. In special cases, auxiliary material (such as appendices), which is not essential to comprehending the article, can be published online only.Due to high costs of colour print, illustration(s) that must be printed in colour should be paid for prior to printing. The current charge for colour print is 300 euros (excl. bank charges) per printer's sheet (16 pages), regardless of the number of colour illustrations that are printed on it. If illustrations occupy more than one printer's sheet, the charge is multiplied by the number of sheets. There is also an option of having illustrations printed in black-and-white with their colour versions online. In such a case no charges apply. Authors, however, should ensure that both version are equally informative.
Only when accepted, an MS Word (.doc or .rtf) file containing the manuscript (text, tables, captions, appendices) and possibly files with the figures should be sent to us by e-mail or on a CD. Illustrations will not be returned.
